After making my daily rounds, I came across an article on Create Digital Music that, in a nutshell, summarized the comments of Elton John and Bob Dylan about how technology is, more or less, ruining music.
About two weeks ago Bob Dylan made comments saying, “New records…have sound all over them,” and went on to rip on the compact disc’s lack of “stature”. He then went after the lack of static in new releases. Great, recordings don’t sound like crap anymore.
Elton John’s comments, published in the bastillion of Journalistic integrity, The Sun, alluded to his sediment the the internet should be “torn down” with the next movement in music and then proceeded to say “I do think it would be an incredible experiment to shut down the whole internet for five years and see what sort of art is produced over that span.”
In all fairness, Elton John’s comments are a prefect example of Drew Crutis’ mass media categorization Celebrity Quote Taken Way Out Of Context (hilarious book, by the way). Really, he just wishes people would stop sitting around blogging about stuff all day and get out and do something or meet new people or maybe even talk to someone. I tend to agree.
Bob Dylan, I’m not so sure about. I just think he’s way behind the curve.
New technology isn’t ruining art, it’s giving people new opportunities to create new art, who otherwise wouldn’t have that ability. New technology isn’t ruining society, it’s just giving people new ways to interact with one another. Some people understand this, and some people don’t. With the same token, some people take these new opportunities way too far.
this just in: the internet is bad.

The key, just like in everything, is moderation.
